What to Expect in January

This month we start the year strong by getting strong!

We are going into a six-week progressive overloading cycle with the Back Squat and Deadlift ending in a 1-Rep test. These strength sessions will happen AFTER the workout to simulate a lift post workout in the Open, and because we are confident you all will feel better prepared to lift after a short and fast paced workout.

Our next priority is going to be our benchmark for the month: Death Row! We will test this workout in January and then re-test it again in April to see our improvement on this BEAST of a workout. We will also see the CF classic: Karen - 150 Wall Balls for time, along with a hero workout during this month as well.

While these will be the big workouts of their weeks they might not necessarily be retested…but it can’t hurt to keep track of your score just in case. Lastly, we will see skill work that will focus around movements that commonly show up in the CF Open and that most of us should have tucked in our back pocket. This month is going to start with a BANG so let’s get ready to ring in 2024 right!

January Weekly Commitments

1x/ Week: Back Squat/ Deadlift (Post Metcon)
2x/ Week: RPE 9-10 Workouts
1x/ Week: Past CF Open Workout

Committed Club Results

This is our first full year since we started the BCCF Committed Club, so the end of the year is a BIG thing! We have THREE prizes to give away on January 3rd:

Monthly winner

Quarterly winner

Year-End Winner

One entry if 11 of 12 months on the list

One entry if 200+ check-ins

Why do we have a Committed Club?

Unlike big box gyms who have a business model of pay for a membership but don’t encourage attending, Blue Crab CrossFit WANTS you to USE YOUR MEMBERSHIP! The more consistently you attend group classes, the better you feel and the more results you’ll see. Our mission is to help you live a stronger, healthier life and in order to do that, you must attend class 3+/week. Our committed club highlights members who made it to the gym 15+ times in a month.

Haven’t made the list? Make that your January 2024 goal to kick off the new year building good habits!

January Athlete of the Month

Arianna R.

Congratulations to our first Athlete of the Month in 2024 - Arianna!

We’re so proud of Arianna for embracing the challenge and working on her consistency at the gym, which has PAID OFF for her by evidence of the huge gains she’s made in a short time. From lifting more than she thought possible for herself to making it to the top of the high rope, to getting pull ups, she’s been CRUSHING IT and we cannot wait to see what 2024 brings for her!

Congratulations on a well-deserved nomination!

Tell us your story - where did you grow up and what kind of activities did you do growing up?

Growing up in Virginia, I was never a super active kid beyond wandering in the woods and riding bikes. I played soccer in highschool but it was purely a social club that I never took seriously. In college, I started running to fight off the freshman fifteen and I have stuck with it pretty consistently without any real training plan or goals.

Tell us how you were first introduced to CrossFit? How long have you been doing CrossFit - any thoughts/comments on how it’s changed or influenced your life?

I started CrossFit in May 2023 after being invited numerous times from some BlueCrab members. I was in a bit of a rut and was bored with running, so decided to give it a try. I was very intimidated by lifting weights and doing something beyond cardio. Lifting weights is still intimidating (especially overhead) but every class I get more comfortable. In the short amount of time I’ve been going to BCCF, I feel like I’ve accomplished a lot of things I thought I could never do like rope climbs or pull ups. I get super geeked out every time now and it hypes me up to come back and do something new. It helps that all the coaches and members are all very supportive and willing to answer my newbie questions.

What goals do you have within the next year - CrossFit and non-CrossFit?

CrossFit goals are to get those dang double unders and continue working on my confidence of picking up heavy things over my head. Non-CrossFit goals include completing some home renovation projects and making my way through my stack of unread books.

Talk to us about your life outside of the gym - hobbies, favorite meal, music, job etc. Any random facts you want us to know?

Outside the gym I still like to wander around the woods but call it hiking. I have a list of restaurants I’ve been eating my way through and I am always looking to add to it, especially French cuisine. I also spend way too much time rummaging at estate sales and thrift stores.

What to expect in April at Blue Crab CrossFit, our April Athletes of the Month, and the March Committed Club Results
By Mandy Brezina 10 Mar, 2024
What to Expect in March February brought us some exciting training leading into the first week of the CrossFit Open. The first big win was testing a 1-RM Back Squat/ Deadlift POST workout. The idea behind this was not only to make sure we can move heavy loads under fatigue but also to prepare us for the CF Open, where there is almost always a heavy lift post-workout! We continued to see old CrossFit Open retest workouts along with testing out Benchmark for the month: The Chief! Leading into the first week of the Open we saw higher RPE workouts towards the beginning of the week that slowly tapered off into lower RPE workouts + a Thursday quality/ recovery day to make sure everyone was geared up for the Open workout on Friday! Let’s see how we are going to finish the CrossFit Open strong in March and highlight any other training focuses. The first two weeks of March are going to be similarly built to the final week of February. This is to make sure the CrossFit Open workout on Friday is the highlight of the week while also allowing everyone to still get a solid week of training in. Post Open, we will have our Leading Ladies Week, which honors National Women’s Month with a week full of Classic Female Benchmarks and some new NCFIT Female Benchmarks we’ve created ourselves! We will also be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a themed workout that surely will have you leaving the gym feeling lucky. We will be testing Fran as our Benchmark workout this month, and we will also see the Hero Workout Laura during Leading Ladies Week. The final highlighted focus for the month is focusing on the Strict Pull-Up or Handstand Holding in skill/strength sessions which will show up once a week to continue building body awareness and gymnastic strength! Weekly Workout March Commitments (2x/ Week) RPE 9-10 Workouts (2-3x/ Week) Focus on Couplets or Triplets (1x/ Week) Workout of the Week or Benchmark/ Classic workout (1x/ Week) Strict Pull-Up Strength or HS Hold Skill session (1 Full Week) Leading Ladies Week (Classic Female Benchmarks/ NCFIT Female Workouts)
